    MSM or methyl sulfonyl methane is a product found in fresh fruits and vegetables, but easily damaged or destroyed during preparation. MSM is also found in all living animals. In the 1960's, a substance called DMSO was believed to be a "miracle" for treating pain from both osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Scientific studies showed that when your body processes DMSO, MSM is found in increased levels. DMSO had many undesirable side effects that are not apparent in MSM. MSM however has shown promise in the relief of pain from OA and RA. MSM works by apparently softening the wall of the cells it comes in contact with. This allows several things to happen. The most obvious is that nutrients and waste can pass to and from the cell easier. Each cell also appears more pliable and the internal pressure of the cell can be lowered. This overall healthier state of the cells allow the body to do its job a little easier, and your long-term health can be improved.

    Glucosamine on the other hand is primarily used as a joint health compound. Glucosamine, like MSM is found almost everywhere, but  lost in food preparation. Current information about Glucosamine suggest that it helps to slow down, stop, or even reverse the loss of cartilage in overused or abused joints, or in RA and OA affected joints. Glucosamine is currently under a clinical trial being conducted by the National Institute of Health. Current research shows Glucosamine to be as safe as MSM, since neither have been shown to have a toxic effect at any level. Glucosamine has also been compared to Chondroitin, which shows similar levels of effect, however the body can readily use as much as 98% of Glucosamine it receives, where typically only 6% - 8% of Chondroitin taken into the body is actually used by the body. Even though Glucosamine is primarily extracted from shellfish, there has never been a verified case of an allergic reaction. This is due to the fact that most people who are allergic to shellfish are actually allergic to a protein in shellfish, not the carbohydrate-based chitin from which Glucosamine is extracted.
